William Showell R.C.A.
Né à Gibraltar de parents Anglais,il s'intéressa très tôt au dessin. De retour au pays parental après huit années, il attend son adolescence pour s'inscrire de soir au Liverpool School of fine arts cours, tout en travaillant le jour. Récipiendaire d'une bourse d'étude à Rome, il dût refuser pour raisons economiques familiales. Devint un peu plus tard, reconnu comme un excellent illustrateur de magazine à la mode, tout comme un artiste à surveiller dans toutes expositions courues à Londres. Plus a l'aise financièrement, il vint séjourner a Montréal et s'y établit. Il laissa graduellement ses contrats commerciaux pour, en 1961 se consacrer à sa carrière de peintre à temps plein. Sa première exposition solo en 1965 fut reçue avec enthousiame par le public Canadien et Américain. Son oeuvre est influencée par le post- impressioniste, et se reconnait par la balance délicate de ses compositions, et les tons subtils qu'il utilise.
Born in Gibraltar from English parents, he lived there for eight years. In England in his teen, he work during the day and studied at night at the school of fine arts of Liverpool. At twenty he moved to London, and became a well known magazine illustrator. He moved to canada in 1957, and start a new way of life, in 1961 decided to be a full time painter. His first solo exposition show at MMFA get a good reception. He painted about poeples of his entourage, ballet dancer, performers, Montreal scenes, landscape. We can feel influences from post-impressionism, and his work is known for his delicate balance of his compositions and the subtle tones used.
