Angel Espoy
Angel Espoy ( 1869-1963 ) Né à villa Nueva, Espagne, il quitte la maison à 18 ans et s'embarque dans la marine marchande. Chaque détails qu'on retrouvent dans ses oeuvres viennebt de ces moments intenses passés en mer. Il s'arrête à Barcelone et s'inscrit à des cours de peinture avec Sorolla, touours sur la route, ou sur la mer, un arrêt à la Havane ou il commence à vivre de son art. il s'installe à New York en 1904 et obtient la citoyenneté Américaine. Après un court séjour en Espagne, il revient aux états Unis et s'installe à San Francisco en 1914. Fait des illustrations et du graphisme quelques temps et les dessins animées projetés en première partie de film de l'époque, pour ce nouvel art qu'est le cinéma. Il aura une vie artistique bien remplie, se spécialisant surtout dans les scènes marines. Il décède en 1963 à Seal Beach, Californie.
Angle Espoy was born in Villa Nueva, Spain on October 2, 1879. He left home at age eighteen to work as a first mate in the Spanish merchant marines. While in that capacity, Espoy acquainted himself with every detail of the clipper ships he later painted. His desire to paint took him to Barcelona where he studied with Sorolla. Two years were spent in Havana where he began to earn his living as an artist by painting designs on furniture. Destitute, Angel made his way to New York City in 1904. After a return to his native land, he moved to San Francisco in 1914. There he supported himself for seven years making cartoons for movies while painting on weekends with Manuel Valencia, Carl Jonnevold, and John Califano. In 1922 Angel Espoy moved to southern California and from that time was able to subsist by the sale of his paintings. His great love of the sea is evident in the body of his work which includes seascapes and maritime subjects; however, he was also an accomplished painter of California's rolling hills of poppies and lupines. Espoy died in Seal Beach, CA on January 31, 1963.
