Wiliam Brassey Hole
William Brassey Hole ( 1846 – 1917 ) est né à Salisbury, Wiltshire, le fils d'un médecin, Richard Hole et son épouse Ann, son père est mort dans l'épidémie de choléra de 1849, lorsque William avait seulement 3 ans, et la famille a déménagée à Edimbourg, en Ecosse, peu de temps après. Il a étudié à l'Académie d'Edimbourg, puis fait un apprentissage comme un ingénieur civil pendant 5 ans, mais il a vraiment voulu être un artiste.
En 1869, il a navigué de Swansea à Gênes, et a passé les 6 prochains mois à voyager et à dessiner autour de l'Italie. A Rome, il fit la connaissance de Keeley Halswelle qui lui a donné des conseils pratiques sur l'art. C'était Halwelle dont la critique encouragé Hole de s'efforcer de devenir un peintre professionnel.
De retour à Edimbourg, Hole entre à l'École de Design, puis a gagné l'admission à l'école de la vie de la Royal Scottish Academy, première exposition en ce lieu en 1873, en 1878, il fut élu membre associé de l'Académie. Pendant ce temps, il a appris la gravure et a été accepté à la Royal Society of Painters et Etchers en 1885, il était déjà membre de la Royal Scottish Society Watercolour (RSW) à partir de 1884. Il a fini par devenir un membre à part entière de l'Académie (RSA).
Hole was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, the son of a doctor, Richard Hole and his wife Ann; His father died in the cholera epidemic of 1849, when William was only 3 years of age, and the family relocated to Edinburgh, Scotland, shortly afterwards. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy, then served an apprenticeship as a civil engineer for 5 years, although he really wanted to be an artist.[1]
In 1869, he sailed from Swansea to Genoa, and spent the next 6 months travelling and sketching around Italy. In Rome he made the acquaintance of Keeley Halswelle who gave him practical advice on art. It was Halwelle whose criticism encouraged Hole to endeavour to become a professional painter.[1]
On returning to Edinburgh, Hole entered the School of Design, then won admission to the life school of the Royal Scottish Academy, first exhibiting there in 1873; in 1878 he was elected an associate of the Academy. Around this time he took up etching and was accepted into the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers (RE) in 1885; he was already a member of the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society (RSW) from 1884.
