Norval Morisseau
Norval Morrisseau, ( 1932 – 2007 ) Artiste de la réserve de Sand Point, près de Thunder Bay , Ontario Canada , 14 mars 1932 - Toronto, Ont., 4 décembre 2007). Artiste autodidacte d'ascendance OJIBWÉE (son nom ojibwé signifie « oiseau-tonnerre de cuivre »), Norval Morrisseau lance le style pictographique, ou ce qu'on a appelé le « Woodland Indian art » (l'art amérindien des régions boisées) ou encore « la peinture de légendes » ou « l'art rayon X », qui se veut la fusion de la peinture de chevalet européenne avec les motifs en spirales de la société Ojibwée MIDEWIWIN et l'imagerie des peintures rupestres. Présenté au public canadien en 1962 par la Pollock Gallery, à Toronto, Morrisseau est le premier artiste autochtone à percer dans le milieu fermé de l'art professionnel blanc. Au cours des années 60, son style pictographique gagne en popularité et il est souvent considéré par d'autres artistes CRIS, Ojibwés et Outaouais comme un style tribal approprié à leurs propres besoins culturels et devient leur Picasso du Nord. Durant les années 70, des artistes plus jeunes peigneront exclusivement dans ce style.
Les années 70 sont pour lui une période de lutte pour concilier la pensée religieuse chrétienne et Midewiwin traditionnelle dans sa vie et dans son art. Au cours des années 80, ses oeuvres sont davantage centrées sur des éléments spirituels, combinant l'héritage Ojibwé que lui a transmis son grand-père maternel, Moses Nanakonagos, et la religion d'Eckankar. Il continue de plus d'étudier les pratiques chamaniques Ojibwées qui, selon lui, permettent à son oeuvre de s'élever vers un plus haut niveau de compréhension.
En 1978 Norval Morrisseau reçevait l'ORDRE DU CANADA. En 2006, le MUSÉE DES BEAUX-ARTS DU CANADA monta une rétrospective itinérante de son œuvre intitulée Norval Morrisseau - artiste chaman.

Norval Morrisseau (Copper Thunderbird) was a Grand Shamon of the Ojibwa people. Founder of the Woodland School of art, heralded as the Picasso of the North, Morrisseau as a single force, brought his message to all through his art.Honoured with the Order of Canada and Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation as well as Holder of the Eagle Feather (the highest honour awarded by the Assembly of First Nations), Morrisseau has forever changed the face of art.
One of seven children, Morrisseau was raised by his maternal grandparents. He left school after the fourth grade and developed his art from 1959 while working in mining and in the early 1960s became a full-time artist. From 1963-66, Morrisseau enlarged the scale of his works and developed his pictographic style, now used by three generations of Aboriginal artists. Combining rich colours, he represents inner realities with strong flowing lines, often indicating spiritual forces. It reflects tensions between Aboriginal cultures and Christianity, shamanism, the interconnection between all living things and the importance of the family. In 1966 Morrisseau, with Carl Ray, created a mural for the Indians of Canada Pavilion at Expo ’67 in Montreal
