Paul Émile Borduas
( 1905 - 1960 ) Originaire de Saint-Hilaire, cet artiste engagé aura une influence marquante sur le développement artistique du Québec. Il étudie d'abord avec Ozias Leduc qui l'initie à la décoration d'églises à Sherbrooke, Halifax et Montréal. Il fait ses beaux-arts de 1923 à 1927 à Montréal puis poursuit aux ateliers d'art sacré à Paris. De retour à Montréal, en pleine crise économique, il doit se rabattre sur l'enseignement pour gagner sa vie. Il obtient un poste à l'École du meuble en 1937 et développe l'art «automatiste» en s'inspirant des conseils que Léonard de Vinci laissait à ses élèves. En 1945, il expose 45 oeuvres surréalistes au théâtre l'Hermitage, à Montréal. Parmi elles on retrouve quelques tableaux «automatistes». Son art influencera plusieurs jeunes artistes, faisant de lui le chef de file du «mouvement automatiste». En 1948, il publie avec d'autres artistes le manifeste du «Refus global» dans lequel il dénonce la pensée conservatrice, la religion et le nationalisme de droite du gouvernement de Maurice Duplessis. Ce geste lui vaudra la perte de son emploi à l'École du meuble, après quoi il se verra dans l'obligation de vendre sa maison de Saint-Hilaire et de s'exiler à New York où la recherche artistique peut se faire plus librement. En 1955, il effectue un passage en France sans connaître de réel succès. Il s'éteint à Paris, laissant derrière lui un héritage artistique qui en a fait le maître de plusieurs jeunes artistes québécois dont Jean-Paul Riopelle. Born November 1st 1905 in Saint Hilaire,P.Q. He worked as an apprentice with Ozias Leduc, painter and decorator of churches who also gave hum painting and history of art lessons. He registered in 1923 at École des Beaux-Arts of Montreal., where he obtained a teaching diploma. His favorite mediums was, oil, charcoal, watercolor, gouache, crayon, and wood sculpture. He was hired in 1927 as drawing teacher. After he left for Europe where he worked as an assistant for the decoration of churches in France. He participated in 1939, with John Lyman in the founding of the C.A.S. ( Contemporary Arts Society ) and became vice-president. In 1942 during a group exhibition at the Séminaire de Joliette, he presented his first attemps at non figurative painting. In 1943, he held an exhibition at the Dominion Gallery of Montreal.
And the most important action of the man BORDUAS, he wrote the ''REFUS GLOBAL'' in which he denounced the oppressing forces which had made the province of Québec, governed by a Conservative Party, under Duplessis, an hostile and choking environment for expressing individual or collective creativity. He published ''Projections Libérantes'' in 1949 and in 1952, the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Montreal held an exposition of all his works. In 1953, he left Canada for United States for a short while and settled in Paris in 1966, where he start painting his materpieces in black and white. He was honored be the Jessie Dow prize in 1949, and was awarded posthumously by the important Guggenheim prize a little later. The government of Quebec gave his name to the highest province distinction in the arts field.
