Eugène Vincent Vidal
Peintre de genre et de portraits, Eugène Vidal est né à Paris en 1850. Il fut l’élève de Gérôme à l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts et débuta au Salon de Paris en 1873 avec un fusain remarqué, « Portrait de Madame Martin ». En 1876, il y expose un « Portrait du Cardinal Lavigerie » et en 1880, il participe à la cinquième exposition des Impressionnistes avec plusieurs portraits dont celui de Georges Sand.
En 1881, il expose à nouveau à la sixième exposition une toile intitulée « Au Café » et reprend ensuite régulièrement ses envois au Salon, jusqu’en 1906, où il expose « Jeune Fille » au Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. En 1900 il obtient une Médaille de bronze à l’Exposition Universelle où il figure avec des portraits et pastels.
Eugène Vidal est un peintre qui, par son éclectisme, peut se manifester aussi bien au Salon académique qu’aux expositions impressionnistes. Certains de ses portraits, comme « la Femme au corset rose » ou la « Jeune Fille de dos coiffée d’un chapeau » , s’apparentent au travail de Mary Cassatt.
Eugène Vidal voyagea aussi en Algérie d’où il a rapporté des scènes de la vie quotidienne et des paysages traités dans une pâte ferme et généreuse, qui font de lui un peintre orientaliste prisé : « Marabouts discutant sur le chemin de Constantine »,(Musée de Tours), « Marabout dans la Mosquée de Constantine », Salon de 1874, « Rue dans la casbah à Alger », Salon de 1878
Painter of portraits first, Eugene Vidal was born in Paris in 1850. He was the pupil of Gérôme of Fine-Art school and began with Salon De Paris in 1873 with a remarkable charcoal drawing, “Portrait of Mrs Martin”. In 1876, he exposed a “Portrait of the Lavigerie Cardinal ” and in 1880, he takes part in the fifth exposure of the Impressionists with several portraits of which included a Georges Sand portrait. In 1881, he exposed once more to the sixth expo, a fabric entitled “In the Coffee shop” and then regularly takes place by sendings his newest works, until 1906, where he exposed “Young girl” to the Salon of the National company of the Art schools. In 1900 he obtains a Bronze medal at the World Fair where he appears with portraits and pastels. Eugene Vidal was a painter who, by his eclecticism, can appear as well with the academic artists of the Salon as with the impressionists exposures. Some of his portraits, like “the Woman with the pink corset” or the “Young girl capped with a hat”, are connected with the work of Mary Cassatt. Eugene Vidal also travelled to Algeria from where he brought back scenes of the daily life and landscapes treated in a paste firm and generous, which make of him a painter snuffed orientalist: “Marabouts discussing on the way of Constantine”, (Museum of Tours), “Marabout in the Mosque of Constantine”, Salon of 1874, “Street in the kasbah in Algiers”, Salon of 1878.
